Enhance the note and knowledge base embedded PDF experience

What is the challenge?
  • Currently when you embed a PDF file within a note it appears in line with the text of a note. Only the text title of the file is discoverable/searchable within a search

  • Within a knowledge base, if a note includes an embedded PDF, clicking the link can have different experiences depending on your browser, but typically results in opening a new browser tab to download the PDF file

  • Embedded PDFs within a note are not independent search results in a published knowledge base

What is the impact?
  • Viewing embedded PDF content in a knowledge base is difficult as it requires an extra step to download

  • Searching for content in a PDF is not possible / harder to discover

Describe your idea.
  • Embedded PDF links in a note should open in the existing tab like a PDF preview with the ability to navigate back to the article or open in the same browser as a pop-up modal with a PDF previewer with the ability to close the preview and be back in the knowledge base article

  • Index a PDF document so that its rich text content (i.e. text) is discoverable in searches

  • Index a PDF document so that it can return as an independent search result in a knowledge base search

I think the most important takeaway from this idea is that it would be highly beneficial to have PDF titles and PDF content searchable within a Knowledge Base. Also, being able to simply open the PDF within the same window without having to deal with the additional step of downloading a file would be excellent as well.
