Quick select a single user when multiple are selected

What is the challenge?

For dashboards, reports and more, users often need to temporarily focus on a single selection without losing their broader context. In our multi-select dropdown, there's currently no fast way to isolate one item while preserving other selections.

What is the impact?

For dashboards, or reusable templates it's very tedious to de-select all the users then select one user, then re-select all the users again.

Describe your idea

In the Selected Items section of the dropdown, we introduce a quick action icon button with a label at the top for "Quick filter." (Label may not be needed for MLP)

This allows users to temporarily switch the dropdown from multi-select to single-user focus without losing all their prior user selections.

Known functionality details:

“Only This” Mode
  • Clicking “The only this icon”:

    • Switches the dropdown to only show the selected user.

    • Disables (but still shows) all other selected users.

    • Applies a disabled checkmark state to previously selected users.

    • When, re-opened, the scroll jumps directly to the “Only selected” user item in view.

    • Only active when 3 or more selected items are active.

UI State Change
  • A Quick Filter banner appears at the top:

    • Contains text like: “Quick filter: [User Name]”

    • Includes a Close icon (×) to exit this mode.

    • Includes a tooltip on hover:

“You’re viewing only this user. Other selections are still saved.”

Exit “Only This” Mode
  • User can click:

    • The “Quick filter” banner or the Close icon

    • The pill that reads "Only this" on the Active item.

  • This returns the dropdown to normal multi-select mode with all prior selections re-enabled.
